Just sent this to the Boston DPW via their web form.

Yesterday, I was at the corner of Causeway and Merrimac. The pedestrian signal turned to the walking man, yet traffic coming from both Merrimac and Lomasney had a green, almost hitting pedestrians in the crosswalk. Please tune the lights at that intersection.

Senator Kennedy returns to Senate to cast vote on Medicare

WASHINGTON (AP) — Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, battling a brain tumor, walked through a wall of applause into the Senate on Wednesday and cast a stunningly unexpected vote on long-stalled Medicare legislation.

“Aye,” the 76-year-old Kennedy said in a loud voice, and he made a thumbs-up gesture as he registered his vote.

Spectators in the galleries that overhang the chamber burst into cheers - a violation of decorum that drew no complaints.

Kennedy made his way into the Senate on his own power, appearing little the worse for his illness. A patch of scalp was clearly visible amid his familiar white hair, although it was not clear whether that was a result of surgery he underwent or the effects of chemotherapy that is part of his treatment.

Letter to Congressman Michael Capuano (D-MA)

I’ve lived in the 8th District for years and met Congressman Capuano once at a finance committee event for Deval Patrick in the summer of 2006 at a law office in Rowes Wharf. I’m also a technologist and web developer.

I’m concerned that the Congressman’s letter is intended to restrict the ability for representatives and their constituents to communicate. As a Democrat, I’m also concerned that this is a political battle that cannot be won unless the Congressman takes the position of lifting as many restrictions as possible on representatives’ abilities to use internet technologies.

I would also like to see my Congressman on Twitter, reaching out and finding constituents in the 8th District to follow, and then actually using the service to inform us about events in the legislature. I’d be happy to consult pro bono to help the Congressman use the service to maximum advantage.

Looking for a part-time volunteering position in the Boston area where I can contribute my technology expertise, I did some research on Idealist. These are the three most promising I could find:

Help build the Citizens Market PHP web app - Citizens Market is a nonprofit developing a user-generated database to gather reliable information on the social and environmental performance of companies. The database will be free, transparent and accessible online.
All-purpose technical volunteer at Haley House - Haley House is a food and housing provider in the South End. They’re looking for an Apple-oriented, all-purpose technical person with web development experience.
Webmaster for the Jewish-Muslim Relations Center - A few hours a month, make updates and changes to their website. Organization works nationally to move relations between Muslims and Jews beyond political conflict.
